Golf Putting Basics: Sink More Putts!

Article by Roy Fankhauser II

Putting is often called “the game within the game” of golf. It’s where scores are made and matches won or lost. Mastering the basics can significantly improve your overall game.

The Grip

● Choose a comfortable grip: There are various putting grips (overlapping, interlocking, reverse overlap). Find one that feels natural and promotes a smooth stroke.

● Light grip pressure: Hold the putter lightly to avoid tension and maintain control.

The Stance and Posture

● Feet shoulder-width apart: Maintain a stable base with your feet positioned comfortably apart.

● Knees slightly bent: Bend your knees slightly for balance and flexibility.

● Eyes over the ball: Position your eyes directly over the ball to ensure a clear line of sight.

The Stroke:

● Pendulum motion: Think of your stroke as a smooth pendulum motion, with the putter head moving straight back and through the ball.

● Follow-through: Complete your stroke with a smooth follow-through, keeping the putter head low to the ground.

It should not pass the outside of your lead foot. This will ensure the maximum MOI is at the ball, not past the ball.

Aim and Alignment

(CHEIF) Club Head, Eyes to Intermittent target, then set your feet.

● Aim at the target line: Visualize the target line and aim the putter face square to it.

● Align your body: Position your body parallel to the target line for a consistent stroke path.

Reading the Green

● Observe the slope: Pay attention to the slope and contours of the green to determine the break of the putt.

● Consider the grain: The grain of the grass can affect the speed and direction of the putt.

● Practice reading greens: Develop your green-reading skis through practice and observation.

● Aim-Point express is a great way to learn reading slope.

Practice and Patience

● Practice regularly: Consistent practice is key to improving your putting.

● Focus on fundamentals: Master the basic techniques before attempting advanced shots.

● Be patient: Putting takes time and dedication to master. Don’t get discouraged by missed putts.

● Use a pre-shot routine and remember that perfect practice makes perfect.

Remember, putting is a mental game as much as it is a physical one. Stay focused, confident, and relaxed, and you’ll see your putting improve dramatically.
