Helping your dog stay calm during a storm can involve creating a safe, comforting environment and using techniques to ease their fear. One of my favorite things to do to calm my dog who does not like storms, is to *redirect.

Redirecting can involve playtime, but if you can mentally stimulate your dog by doing some fun training, this will occupy the dog’s mind with something other than its fear. It’s important to remember that we do not want to leave our dogs in a fearful state, if possible, but rather mentally stimulating them, will calm them and calm their nerves.
You can also set up a designated safe space in your home where your dog feels secure. This could be a quiet room, a cozy bed, or a crate with a blanket draped over it to create a den-like atmosphere. Dogs often feel comforted in enclosed spaces, especially during stressful situations.
Noise-canceling techniques, like playing soothing music or white noise, can help drown out the sounds of the storm. You might also consider using calming products, such as anxiety wraps like a Thundershirt, which apply gentle, reassuring pressure, or pheromone diffusers that release relaxing scents.
For dogs with severe anxiety, consult your veterinarian. They may recommend natural calming supplements or prescribe medication if needed. With preparation and the right approach, you can significantly reduce your dog's stress and help them weather the storm more peacefully.
