The Value of Donating Local

Most are familiar with national organizations such as the United Way, American Red Cross, and St. Jude, who all make a positive difference due in part to sheer economies of scale. However, have you considered the benefits of selecting a community charity, one where you will see firsthand just how your donation is making a difference?

Jupiter-based nonprofit Chasin A Dream Foundation built their organization on the tenet of “locals helping locals” with the belief that if donors could meet the children battling life threatening illnesses and disabilities in the community, and follow their journey, they would be more apt to not only donate once but to invest in their community of children.

Local charities address a specific need in the community whether it be for children, animals, hunger, homelessness or a multitude of other issues. Donating locally ensures your donations are directed toward relevant issues in your backyard.

Local donations strengthen community ties and encourage community engagement by fostering a sense of connection and responsibility. And, if your charity of choice purchases goods or services with your donation, you are helping to sustain local businesses and create local jobs.

By donating locally you witness the direct impact of your contribution, strengthening your connection to the community and supporting organizations that are closely aligned with local needs.

As with any charity it is advisable to do your research and ask the tough questions: What percentage of your donation goes directly to programs vs. administrative costs? Typically you want an organization that uses over 80% of every dollar donated to go directly to their program and have low administrative costs. Who specifically will benefit from your donation and what measurable outcomes have they achieved?

When selecting a charity, understand their mission and ensure it aligns with your philanthropic values; look for transparency; research their track record; review their financial health; and assess how well the organization is integrated into and supported by the local community.
