Making the Holiday Season Safe and Joyful for You and Your Dog
Article by Pet Influencer CarrieAnn MonteLeon
The holiday season is one of the most anticipated times of the year, whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or gathering with friends.
If you are able to include your dog in the festivities, this can make these moments even more special.
Here are a few tips that I discuss with my clients to help them create a holiday season that’s memorable, and safe.
Make a Game Plan for Your Front Door, and The Gift Wrapping
With guests arriving, doors will be opening quickly and frequently, creating opportunities for dogs to slip outside unnoticed.
Designate a secure area away from the door, or leash your dog, so that you can easily get them. This prevents any escape attempts! Gift wrapping is a ton of fun, but most dogs see the ribbon, the bows, and the boxes as either their toys or something to be eaten.
The ribbons or string can be very dangerous, either wrapping around the intestines, or potentially causing a blockage, so please be mindful of this, and if you have children, it may be a great idea to have a quick “family meeting,” so that everyone is on board.
Guard Against Food Hazards
During the holidays, tables and counters are often filled with festive dishes that can be harmful to dogs.
• Latkes for Hanukkah: While delicious, latkes contain onions, which are toxic to dogs.
• Shellfi sh and Other Rich Foods: Shellfi sh is very toxic to dogs, so if your family happens to do the “7 Fishes”, for instance, please consider what may be toxic to your dogs.
• Chocolate and Sweets:
We all know about chocolate but what about some holiday candies that contain xylitol, or artificial sweeteners, which are very dangerous.
By taking a few precautions, you’ll create a fantastic and fun holiday season.
